Ready to come up for air, recharge your CPS batteries, and connect with parents and educators who are blazing a different trail? The Eighth Annual Lives in the Balance Summit is here! This year's Summit features a full-morning keynote presentation from Julie Causton, PhD, Professor in the Inclusive and Special Education Program in the Department of Teaching and Leadership at Syracuse University, along with breakout groups for parents, educators, and clinicians. The Summit will also feature a screening of the documentary film from Lives in the Balance, The Kids We Lose. So whether you're new to the CPS model or an old hand, you'll find what you're looking for. And if checking out the fall leaves in Maine is appealing, you may want to arrive a few days early. Registration (8:00 to 8:30) Continental Breakfast Keynote (8:45 to 12:00) Julie Causton,PhD ~ Creating and Maintaining Inclusive Schools for ALL This interactive, dynamic, energetic 3-hour keynote is filled with useful ideas and strategies for creating inclusive schools for students with and without disabilities, and will include examples from schools and school systems throughout North America that have been successful in doing so. Lunch ( 12:00 to 1:00) Lunch Provided First Breakout Sessions (1:00 to 2:30) Heartset: The Inclusive Art of Supporting Students with Challenging Behavior: This session will help educators shift from a behavior management mindset to a heartset approach that supports students with kindness, creativity and compassion. Participants will be helped to focus on student strengths, gifts and talents, illuminate how to create connections between students, and ignite student creativity, and problem-solve how to meet the social, emotional and academic needs of students. The aim is to give educators the philosophy and the tools to encourage deeper relationships with students, promote desired student behavior, and improve inclusive classroom community and culture for all while demonstrating strategies at the same time. Parent Track - Basics of CPS: If you’re a parent and you’re new to the CPS model, this breakout group will provide you with the basics…so you’re ready for more in the afternoon. Parent Track - Advanced CPS: If you have existing familiarity with the CPS model, you’re ready for the next level…and this breakout group will take you there. Educator Track - Basics of CPS: If you’re an educator and you’re new to the CPS model, this breakout group will get you started…then you'll be ready for the next level in the afternoon. Educator Track - Advanced CPS: This breakout group is the next level for educators with existing familiarity with the CPS model. Educator Track - Building Leadership Density: Implementing CPS in a school requires leadership...and while support and buy-in from administrators is crucial, leaders can come from throughout the building. Here's how to make it happen. Clinician Track: Learn about the ins and outs of using CPS in a clinical practice. Second Breakout Sessions (2:45 to 4:15) Beyond Treats and Timeouts: This session is for anyone who is looking beyond the typical ways of providing behavioral supports in schools. This time will be filled with useful ideas and strategies that will help participants move beyond the sticker chart. Parent Track - Advanced CPS: If you have existing familiarity with the CPS model – for example, you attended the Basics breakout group in the morning -- you’re ready for the next level. And this breakout group is for you. For Parents Only: If you're a member of The B Team -- and even if you're not -- this is a chance to get together with parents with varying levels of experience in the CPS model to share stories
