Advanced Airway Workshop
This MEAC-approved program was designed to provide in depth information and skills training in advanced airways for neonates for midwives attending birth in settings where they provide immediate newborn care. Included in the program is discussion of the midwifery scope of practice for newborn resuscitation at planned birth center and home births, and the role of the advanced airway during resuscitation of the neonate. This workshop is limited to 8 participants. Behavioral Objectives and Learning Outcomes: At the conclusion of this course the participant will be able to 1. Describe the anatomy of the airway and it’s relationship to advanced airway devices2. Discuss the role of advanced airway support in neonatal resuscitation and treatment of persistent pulmonary hypertension3. Compare the clinical utility of the LMA and ET tube when used during newborn resuscitation in the birth center or home setting4. Prepare and demonstrate correct insertion of the LMA and ET tube using a neonatal model5. List 3 potential risks associated with advanced airway use and ways to mitigate these risks6. Assess personal skill development during facilitated debriefing
