The Midwife as First Assistant
This didactic and skills workshop taught by Nell Tharpe MS CNM FACNM brings recommendations for evidence-based practice to the table so that midwives can expand their core midwifery skills to include the role of first assistant for women who undergo cesarean. ACNM specialty credit is available (ACNM Program # 2018/038 valid through 3/19/2020). The workshop's focus is on applying current evidence to allow the midwife to participate and provide continuity of care for women during cesarean as the surgical first assistant. This workshop provides core knowledge and skills needed to perform at the novice level. The midwife is then responsible to set up mentored experience at her or his clincal setting to gain the skill to function efficiently, effectively, and with greater confidence as a member of the perioperative maternity care team. The surgical first assistant workshop includes prevention of the primary cesarean, the woman’s preoperative preparation and informed consent, and functioning as an active member of the perioperative team, the role of the first assistant in applying surgical skills, participating in tissue dissection, performance of wound closure, management of complications and care of the woman after surgery. Mentored simulation builds demonstrates knowledge of core surgical skills and coordination of perioperative team members through performance of cesarean on simulation models. * The workshop Surgical Knot-Tying and Suturing is a prerequisite for this workshop Each workshop must be registered for separately. There is a discounted fee for those who register for all 3 workshops. There are 2 discounted Internship tickets available each workshop for those who are interested in helping with classroom set up, models and materials, managment of CE certificates and evaluations during the workshop, refreshments and clean up. The Intern role requires making a commitment and staying earlier and later to accomplish these tasks. 10% of all ticket sales goes to supporting midwifery through advocacy and our professional associations.
